South African Intellectual Property Fund | Investment Criteria

Technology Focus:  The Fund makes long-term (3- to 7-year) equity investments in start-up, early-stage and expansion-stage South African technology companies that have significant growth potential and are run by experienced entrepreneurs.

Broad Technology Definition:   The Fund's mandate defines technology broadly to include any invention or innovation, patented or otherwise, that leads to differentiated products and/or corporate productivity growth.

Size of Investment:  The size of the Fund's investments ranges from R3 million to 15% of the size of the Fund at any one time.

Co-investment Policy:  The Fund prefers to be the lead investor in its investments. It contributes not more than 50% of the capital required per investment. In exceptional cases, the Fund may invest 75% of the capital required for a seed or start-up investment.

Contribution to Empowerment:  The Fund actively promotes BEE involvement at shareholder, director and operational level in all its portfolio companies over the life of its investment.
